Pterodroma sandwichensis

The Hawaiian Petrel, or Pterodroma sandwichensis, is a medium-sized seabird with a wingspan of about 95 cm. It has a dark grey upper body and white underparts, with a distinctive black cap and a black patch around the eyes. This species is known for its nocturnal habits, nesting in burrows on remote Hawaiian islands and foraging over the open ocean. The Hawaiian Petrel faces threats from introduced predators, habitat degradation, and light pollution, leading to its vulnerable status according to the IUCN Red List. Conservation efforts are underway to protect its nesting sites and reduce threats to this iconic seabird.
