Zapornia sandwichensis
The Hawaiian Rail (Zapornia sandwichensis) is a small, flightless bird endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. It has a distinctive appearance with a dark brown plumage, short wings, and a long, slightly curved bill. These birds are primarily found in wetland habitats such as marshes, swamps, and coastal areas, where they forage for invertebrates and small crustaceans. Due to habitat loss, predation by introduced species, and human activities, the Hawaiian Rail is considered critically endangered. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and restore its remaining habitat and populations.
