Diaphorapteryx hawkinsi
Hawkins's Rail (Diaphorapteryx hawkinsi) is a flightless bird species endemic to the Chatham Islands of New Zealand. It is a small, secretive bird with a mottled brown plumage, short wings, and a long, slender bill. This elusive species is known for its skulking behavior in dense vegetation, making it difficult to observe in the wild. Hawkins's Rail is primarily nocturnal, foraging for invertebrates and small vertebrates in its forest and scrubland habitat. Due to habitat loss and predation by introduced species, Hawkins's Rail is classified as Endangered by the IUCN.
