Highland Guan

Zentrygon chiriquensis

The Highland Guan (Zentrygon chiriquensis) is a medium-sized bird found in the cloud forests of Costa Rica and western Panama. It is known for its distinctive call, a series of loud, resonant hoots. This species is primarily arboreal, foraging for fruits, seeds, and insects in the dense vegetation of its montane habitat. The Highland Guan is characterized by its striking plumage, with a black head, chestnut belly, and white spots on the wings. It is an important seed disperser in its ecosystem, contributing to the maintenance of forest diversity. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and hunting, the conservation status of the Highland Guan is currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
