Hooded Grebe, Podiceps gallardoi, breeds on submontane lakes in western Santa Cruz Province in south-west Argentina and spends the non-breeding season at the Santa Cruz River estuary and nearby coast in south-east Argentina. It is a grebe of the Podicipedidae family, first described by Rumboll in 1974. During the breeding season it uses basaltic lakes with aquatic plants, which it needs for nesting. Outside the breeding period it is recorded on estuaries and coastal waters. Its range is in southern Argentina, with breeding sites in remote Patagonian lakes.
