Hooded Mannikin

Lonchura spectabilis (Sclater, PL, 1879)

Estrildidae — Waxbills, Munias & Allies

Hooded Mannikin, Lonchura spectabilis, is a passerine of northern and south-eastern New Guinea and New Britain in the south-east Bismarck Archipelago. It inhabits foothills and mid-montane grassland, especially open ground cleared by people. The bird is a small munia and is unlikely to be mistaken for others in its range. Its plumage is whitish below and brown above, with a golden to orange rump. The juvenile resembles the juvenile great-billed mannikin, though that bird is much larger. It was described by Sclater in 1879.
