Hooded Plover

Hooded Plover Thinornis cucullatus breeds in coastal and inland south-western Western Australia, coastal south-central South Australia, south-eastern New South Wales, south-eastern Australia and Tasmania. It is a plover in the family Charadriidae. The bird was first described in 1818 by Vieillot. It has a black hood and throat set off by a white collar, with a red bill tipped in black, a red eye ring and orange legs. Juveniles lack the black head and hindneck, which are sandy brown instead. Adults and juveniles are otherwise alike.
