Hook-billed Kite

Chondrohierax uncinatus (Temminck, 1822)

Hook-billed Kite, Chondrohierax uncinatus, breeds from southern Texas through Middle America and on into northern Argentina. It is a bird of prey in the Accipitridae family, and its range also reaches the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America and tropical South America. A striking feature is its large, downcurved bill, which varies greatly in size. Birds may be hard to identify because plumage also differs widely. The species was described by Temminck in 1822. Some authors treat the Cuban kite as a subspecies of this bird.
