Huia

Chlamydochaera jefferyi

The Huia, scientifically known as Chlamydochaera jefferyi, was a unique bird endemic to New Zealand. It was known for its distinctive sexual dimorphism, with the male having glossy black plumage and a striking ivory-white bill, while the female had a long, slender, and downward-curved bill. The Huia inhabited the native forests of North Island and was renowned for its melodious calls. Unfortunately, due to habitat destruction and overhunting for its beautiful tail feathers, the Huia became extinct in the early 20th century, making it a poignant symbol of human impact on biodiversity.
