Imperial Woodpecker

Melionyx princeps

The Imperial Woodpecker (Melionyx princeps) is a large woodpecker species native to the montane forests of western Mexico. It is known for its impressive size, with a length of up to 58 cm and a striking red crest on the head. This species is characterized by its powerful drumming and loud calls, which echo through the forest. The Imperial Woodpecker is a keystone species in its habitat, playing a crucial role in ecosystem dynamics through its foraging activities and cavity excavation. Unfortunately, the species is believed to be extinct, with the last confirmed sighting in the 1950s, primarily due to habitat loss and hunting.
