Pitta brachyura (Linnaeus, 1766)

Indian Pitta, Pitta brachyura, is a passerine of the Oriental Region, breeding in India. It is found in scrub jungle, deciduous forest and dense evergreen forest, and its breeding areas include the Himalayan forests and the hills of central and western India. In winter it moves to other parts of the peninsula. It is a shy bird that stays low in cover and on the forest floor, where it takes insects. It is more often heard than seen, with a two-note whistle most often given at dawn and dusk.
