Indian Pond Heron

Ardeola speciosa

The Indian Pond Heron, scientifically known as Ardeola speciosa, is a small heron species found in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and parts of China. During the breeding season, the plumage of the Indian Pond Heron transforms into a striking mix of orange, brown, and white, while in non-breeding plumage, it becomes predominantly grey. This adaptable bird is often found in a variety of wetland habitats, including marshes, ponds, and rice fields, where it forages for fish, insects, and small amphibians. The Indian Pond Heron is known for its stealthy hunting behavior, patiently waiting for prey before striking with lightning speed. Despite facing some threats from habitat loss and hunting, the species is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
