Saucerottia cyanura
The Indigo-capped Hummingbird (Saucerottia cyanura) is a striking species found in the highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama. This small hummingbird is known for its dazzling iridescent plumage, with males displaying a vibrant blue cap and throat, while females have a more subdued greenish-blue coloring. These agile birds are often seen feeding on nectar from a variety of flowers, using their long, specialized bills to reach deep into blooms. They also consume small insects and spiders as a source of protein. The Indigo-capped Hummingbird is typically found in montane forests and adjacent clearings, where it flits among the foliage and performs impressive aerial displays during courtship.
