Japanese Green Woodpecker, Picus awokera, is a woodpecker found in central and southern Japan, from Honshu to the Kyushu group. It is endemic to Japan and is closely related to the European green woodpecker. In its range it occurs in open mixed woodland in the north and warm-temperate evergreen forest in the south, and it also uses parks and gardens. It is usually seen in hilly country and lower mountain areas, most often between 300 and 1400 m, though it can occur in lowlands and as high as 2000 m.
