Japanese Scops Owl, Otus semitorques, is a resident owl of ne China, the Korean Peninsula, Ussuriland, Japan and the Ryukyu Islands. It belongs to the family Strigidae and was described by Temminck and Schlegel in 1845. It is a small owl with grey-brown plumage, red eyes and prominent ear tufts. It lives in forests, woodlands and mountains, and also occurs in wooded hillsides, lowland forest, forested plains, parks and gardens. It is found from sea level to 900 metres. Three subspecies are recognised.
