Japanese Wood Owl

Ninox japonica

The Japanese Wood Owl (Ninox japonica) is a medium-sized owl species native to Japan. It is characterized by its round face, large dark eyes, and mottled brown and gray plumage. These nocturnal birds are skilled hunters, preying on small mammals, birds, and insects. They are often found in dense forests and wooded areas, where they roost in tree cavities during the day. The Japanese Wood Owl is known for its haunting hoots and calls during the night, as it establishes territories and communicates with other owls. While not currently considered to be at risk, habitat loss and deforestation pose potential threats to their populations.
