Javan Lapwing

Vanellus macropterus (Wagler, 1827)

Charadriidae — Plovers

Javan Lapwing, Vanellus macropterus, is a wader of the plover family that breeds in Java in the Oriental Region. It was a large, long-legged bird of marshy steppe-like ground, especially in river deltas and in areas set back from coastal sand dunes. Records place it historically in two parts of the island, one in the west along the north coast and another in the east on the south coast. It has not been confirmed since 1940, and the last accepted assessment treated it as Critically Endangered, with later review recognising it as Possibly Extinct.
