Jerdon’s Courser, Rhinoptilus bitorquatus, is a bird of the Eastern Ghats in Andhra Pradesh, India, where it is extremely rare in tropical scrub jungle. It belongs to the Glareolidae, the family that includes coursers and pratincoles, and was described by Blyth in 1848. Its known range is very small and confined to southern India. The species was first collected in the Eastern Ghats and later rediscovered after a long period when it was believed to be extinct. It remains one of India’s most restricted birds.
