Junin Canastero

Asthenes virgata (Sclater, PL, 1874)

Junin Canastero, Asthenes virgata, is a bird of central and southern Peru in the ovenbird family Furnariidae. It occurs in humid grassland with tall bunch grass, sometimes with scattered bushes and near polylepis, and it also uses rocky bunchgrass areas without trees or shrubs. Its range is split between the meeting point of Junín, Pasco and Lima, and a second area from Ayacucho through Cuzco and Apurímac into Puno, with scattered records between. It is a resident throughout the year and is found at 3,300 to 4,600 m.
