Junin Grebe

Podiceps taczanowskii

The Junin Grebe is a small, critically endangered waterbird native to Lake Junin in the Andes of central Peru. It has a distinctive black and white plumage, with a black cap and neck, and a white face and underparts. This species is well-adapted to its high-altitude habitat, using its lobed feet for efficient swimming and diving. It primarily feeds on small fish and invertebrates. The Junin Grebe is highly threatened by habitat loss, pollution, and introduced species, and conservation efforts are focused on protecting its remaining habitat and controlling threats.
