Kangean Shama

Copsychus nigricauda (Vorderman, 1893)

Muscicapidae — Chats, Old World Flycatchers

Kangean Shama, Copsychus nigricauda, is a passerine of the Muscicapidae family found on the Kangean Islands north of Bali in Indonesia. It is endemic to that island group and is probably extinct in the wild. First described by Vorderman in 1893, it was once treated as part of the white-rumped shama but is now recognised as a separate species. The bird has glossy blue-black upperparts, chestnut underparts with a white vent, a white rump, and a mostly black tail with white tips on the outer feathers. The sexes look alike, though females have a shorter tail.
