Kauai Akialoa

Hemignathus affinis

The Kauai Akialoa, or Hemignathus affinis, is a now-extinct bird species that was endemic to the island of Kauai in Hawaii. It belonged to the honeycreeper family and was known for its distinctive long, decurved bill, which it used to feed on nectar from native flowers. The Kauai Akialoa was a small, colorful bird with a greenish-yellow plumage and a black mask. It inhabited the montane rainforests of Kauai and was once a common sight, but due to habitat destruction and the introduction of non-native species, the population rapidly declined, leading to its extinction. Efforts to conserve its habitat and protect other native Hawaiian birds continue in an attempt to prevent further extinctions.
