Strigopidae — New Zealand Parrots
Kea, Nestor notabilis, is a parrot of the montane South Island of New Zealand in the Strigopidae family. It is found in forested and alpine parts of that island, and its breeding range is in Australasia. First described by Gould in 1856, it is a large bird with a long, narrow, curved upper bill. It is also noted for intelligence and curiosity, and has been observed solving puzzles, cooperating to reach a goal, and using tools. It nests in burrows or in crevices among tree roots.
