Keel-billed Motmot, Electron carinatum, breeds in Middle America from southern Mexico to northern Costa Rica. It is a member of the motmot family, Momotidae, and was first described by Du Bus de Gisignies in 1847. This bird lives on the Caribbean side of Central America, where it uses humid evergreen forest and especially steep gullies with streams. Its range is patchy, and it is recorded from Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. It is the only species in its genus, and its plumage and structure are noted for being unlike those of its closest relative.
