Kerguelen Tern

Sterna virgata

The Kerguelen Tern (Sterna virgata) is a medium-sized seabird found in the subantarctic regions of the southern Indian Ocean. It has a distinctive black cap on its head, a white body, and a forked tail. This species is known for its graceful flight and agile diving abilities, which it uses to catch fish and squid. Kerguelen Terns are colonial nesters, often choosing remote islands and rocky coastlines as breeding sites. They are highly vocal during the breeding season, emitting sharp calls and displaying aerial acrobatics. The population of Kerguelen Terns is currently stable, but they face potential threats from habitat disturbance and climate change.
