Kioea

Chaetoptila angustipluma (Peale, 1849)

Kioea, Chaetoptila angustipluma, was a bird of the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific Ocean, confined to Hawaiʻi and now extinct. It belonged to the passerines in the family Mohoidae. The bird was notable for a long, slightly downcurved bill, a dark band across the face, and stiff, bristle-like feathers on the head and breast. It was a large species, measuring about 13 inches, or 33 cm, in length. Four museum specimens are known, all from Hawaiʻi. It disappeared in the mid-19th century after its forest home was altered and predators were introduced.
