Lanai Akialoa

Akialoa lanaiensis

The Lanai Akialoa, also known as the Laysan Akialoa, was a species of Hawaiian honeycreeper endemic to the island of Lanai. It was a small, nectarivorous bird with a decurved bill, adapted for feeding on the nectar of native flowers. Unfortunately, this species is believed to be extinct, with the last confirmed sighting in 1939. The primary threats to its existence were habitat destruction and the introduction of non-native species. Efforts to locate any remaining individuals have been unsuccessful, and it is a tragic example of the impact of human activities on vulnerable island ecosystems.
