Large-tailed Dove

Leptotila megalura

The Large-tailed Dove (Leptotila megalura) is a species of dove found in the humid forests of Central and South America. This medium-sized bird is characterized by its striking iridescent green and purple plumage on the upperparts, with a contrasting pale gray underbelly. The species is known for its distinctive long, graduated tail, which gives it a unique appearance in flight. Large-tailed Doves are often found foraging on the forest floor for seeds and fallen fruits, and their mournful cooing calls can be heard echoing through the dense vegetation. Despite their secretive nature, these doves play an important role in seed dispersal and contribute to the overall health of their forest habitats.
