Large-tailed Nightjar

Caprimulgus macrurus

The Large-tailed Nightjar is a nocturnal bird found in South and Southeast Asia. It is known for its distinctive call, a loud churring sound that is often heard at dusk and dawn. This species has a cryptic plumage that provides excellent camouflage during the day, making it difficult to spot in its preferred habitat of open woodlands, scrub, and grasslands. Large-tailed Nightjars feed on flying insects, which they catch in flight using their wide gape and bristles around the mouth. They are medium-sized nightjars with long wings and a distinctive white patch on the tail. Despite their widespread distribution, their populations are thought to be declining due to habitat loss and fragmentation.
