Lark Sparrow

Chondestes grammacus

The Lark Sparrow (Chondestes grammacus) is a distinctive medium-sized sparrow found in open grasslands, prairies, and scrublands of North America. It is easily recognized by its bold facial pattern, with a striking black and white head stripe and chestnut crown. Lark Sparrows are known for their melodious and complex songs, often delivered from a prominent perch. They forage on the ground, feeding on seeds, insects, and small fruits. During the breeding season, they build cup-shaped nests on the ground or low in shrubs. While their populations are generally stable, habitat loss and fragmentation pose threats to their long-term survival.
