Lava Rail
Laterallus levraudi
The Lava Rail (Laterallus levraudi) is a small, secretive bird species endemic to the Galápagos Islands. It is characterized by its dark plumage with chestnut undertail coverts and a short, straight bill. This species is primarily found in dense vegetation near freshwater sources, such as marshes, ponds, and wetlands. The Lava Rail is known for its elusive behavior and is often heard rather than seen. It forages for invertebrates and seeds in the undergrowth, using its slender build to navigate through the dense vegetation. Due to its restricted range and habitat loss, the conservation status of the Lava Rail is currently listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
