Lawrence's Goldfinch

Spinus lawrencei (Cassin, 1850)

Lawrence's Goldfinch, Spinus lawrencei, is a finch of the south-western United States and north-western Mexico, with breeding in California and Baja California. It is a wandering bird, and its range shifts with the seasons. In breeding areas it uses dry, open woodland close to brush, fields of tall annual weeds and a small water source, and it may also nest in rural residential settings. Outside the breeding period it turns up in many open places, including deserts, suburbs and city parks. It is notable for its irregular movements and for nesting in a loose cup placed in a fork of small branches.
