Laysan Duck

Anas laysanensis

The Laysan Duck, scientifically known as Anas laysanensis, is a small dabbling duck endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. It is characterized by its mottled brown plumage, a distinctive white eye ring, and a slightly upturned bill. These ducks primarily inhabit freshwater wetlands, marshes, and coastal lagoons, where they forage for aquatic invertebrates and plant matter. Due to habitat loss, predation, and the introduction of non-native species, the Laysan Duck is considered critically endangered. Conservation efforts, including habitat restoration and predator control, are crucial for the survival of this species.
