Laysan Honeycreeper

Himatione fraithii Rothschild, 1892

Fringillidae — Finches, Euphonias

Laysan Honeycreeper, Himatione fraithii, is a passerine finch that bred on Laysan in the Hawaiian Islands. It was confined to that island and is now extinct. First named by Rothschild in 1892, it was long treated as part of the ʻapapane before being restored as a separate species. The bird was associated with the island’s interior, especially tall grass and low bushes near the plain by the lagoon. It was also recorded as the rarest of Laysan’s birds. Its scientific name honours George D. Freeth, though it was originally misspelt.
