Laysan Rail Zapornia palmeri is an extinct rail of Laysan in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, where it bred on the Pacific Ocean island of Laysan. It was a flightless bird and a small member of the rail family, with reduced wings and tail, a strong straight bill and well-developed legs. The species was endemic to that island, and an introduced population also lived on Midway Atoll for some decades early in the twentieth century. It disappeared after habitat loss linked to domestic rabbits and predation by rats.
