Leach's Storm-Petrel

Hydrobates leucorhous

Leach's Storm-Petrel is a small seabird that is widely distributed across the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans. It has a dark plumage, with a white rump and a distinctive pale bar across the upper wing. These birds are highly pelagic, spending most of their lives at sea, only returning to land to breed. They are skilled fliers, using their long, narrow wings to glide effortlessly over the waves. Leach's Storm-Petrels are known for their haunting, chattering calls that fill the night air around their breeding colonies. They primarily feed on small fish and plankton, often foraging in large flocks. These birds are highly adapted to a life at sea, with specialized tubular nostrils that excrete excess salt.
