Least Bittern

Botaurus exilis

The Least Bittern (Botaurus exilis) is a small heron species found in North and South America. It is known for its secretive nature and is often difficult to spot due to its habit of staying hidden in dense marsh vegetation. The plumage of the Least Bittern is predominantly brown and buff, providing excellent camouflage in its wetland habitat. This species is a skilled hunter, feeding on small fish, insects, and amphibians. Least Bitterns are typically found in freshwater and brackish marshes, where they use their long toes to navigate through the dense vegetation. Despite being relatively common, the Least Bittern faces threats from habitat loss and degradation.
