Least Tern

Sternula antillarum

The Least Tern (Sternula antillarum) is a small seabird with a length of about 9 inches and a wingspan of approximately 20 inches. It has a white underside, gray wings, and a black cap on its head during the breeding season. Outside of the breeding season, the black cap is less distinct. This species is known for its graceful flight and agile diving to catch small fish. Least Terns nest on sandy beaches, salt flats, and gravel bars, often in colonies. They are highly vocal during the breeding season, emitting sharp, high-pitched calls. These birds are migratory, spending the winter in Central and South America. They are vulnerable to habitat loss and disturbance, and their conservation status is listed as 'Near Threatened' by the IUCN.
