Lesser Cuckoo, Cuculus poliocephalus, is a cuckoo in the family Cuculidae, breeding across south-east Siberia and Japan to southern China, north-east and south-east Asia, and the Himalayas. It spends the non-breeding season in India and East Africa. Latham described it in 1790. In Japan it is known as hototogisu, and it has long been praised in senryu and waka, with a place in poetry from Kokin wakashū onwards. It also appears in The Pillow Book and the Hyakunin Isshu, and gives its name to the magazine Hototogisu.
