Lesser Goldfinch

Spinus psaltria

The Lesser Goldfinch is a small, lively songbird found in the western United States and Mexico. Males have bright yellow underparts and a black back, while females have paler yellow underparts and an olive-green back. They are often found in open woodlands, scrublands, and gardens, where they forage for seeds and insects. These social birds are known for their cheerful, bubbling song and acrobatic flight displays during courtship. The Lesser Goldfinch is adaptable and can be found in a variety of habitats, from deserts to mountain forests. Although their populations are generally stable, habitat loss and pesticide use pose threats to their numbers.
