Lesser Nighthawk

Chordeiles pusillus

The Lesser Nighthawk is a small, nocturnal bird found in open habitats across the Americas. With a wingspan of around 22 inches, it has a cryptic plumage that provides excellent camouflage during the day. Its distinctive call, a nasal peent, is often heard at dusk as it emerges to hunt for insects in flight. Lesser Nighthawks are known for their agile aerial acrobatics, using their long, slender wings to maneuver with precision. They typically nest on the ground, laying two spotted eggs in a shallow depression. While not currently considered threatened, their populations may be impacted by habitat loss and disturbance.
