Chordeiles acutipennis

The Lesser Nighthawk (Chordeiles acutipennis) is a nocturnal bird found in open habitats across the Americas. With a wingspan of around 55 cm, it has a cryptic plumage that aids in camouflage during the day. Its distinctive call and agile flight make it a fascinating species to observe at dusk and dawn. Lesser Nighthawks are insectivorous, feeding on a variety of flying insects captured in flight. They are known for their aerial foraging behavior, swooping and darting to catch prey. These birds are often found in arid regions, grasslands, and open woodlands. Their conservation status is currently listed as 'Least Concern' by the IUCN.
