Little Buttonquail

Turnix velox

The Little Buttonquail (Turnix velox) is a small ground-dwelling bird found in Australia and New Guinea. It is known for its cryptic plumage, which provides excellent camouflage in its grassland and savanna habitats. This species is primarily active during the night, foraging for seeds, insects, and small invertebrates. The Little Buttonquail is characterized by its short, rounded wings and a distinctive call that resembles a mechanical ticking sound. Despite its small size, this bird is an adept flier and can cover long distances during migration. Due to habitat loss and predation, the conservation status of the Little Buttonquail is currently listed as Near Threatened.
