Little Grebe

Tachybaptus ruficollis

The Little Grebe, also known as the dabchick, is a small waterbird found in freshwater lakes, ponds, and rivers across Europe, Asia, and Africa. It has a distinctive appearance with a dark brown back, a chestnut neck, and a black crown. This diving bird is an excellent swimmer and hunter, feeding on aquatic invertebrates and small fish. The Little Grebe builds floating nests among reeds and vegetation, where it lays its eggs. It is a shy and elusive bird, often heard with its distinctive whinnying call. Despite its widespread distribution, the Little Grebe faces threats from habitat loss and degradation.
