Little Spotted Kiwi

Little Spotted Kiwi, Apteryx owenii, is a kiwi of New Zealand, breeding on Kapiti I. off the south-west of the North I. and on other predator-free satellite islands. It belongs to the Apterygidae and is a flightless bird. Once found on both main islands, it is now mainly limited to small offshore islands and fenced mainland reserves. A conservation move a century ago transferred five birds from the South Island to Kapiti Island, where the population later increased. It was thought to be absent from the mainland until a wild rediscovery in 2025.
