Locust Finch

Paludipasser locustella Neave, 1909

Estrildidae — Waxbills, Munias & Allies

Locust Finch, Paludipasser locustella, is a waxbill of south-central and south-eastern Africa, breeding in sc and se Africa. It was first described by Neave in 1909 and is the only member of Paludipasser. It is linked to damp, lightly covered ground in grassland near water, especially sandy areas such as sandveld. The species is mainly associated with the Uele River basin, Zambia and Malawi. It has also been recorded across several neighbouring countries, and in Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique it is rather rare.
