Long-eared Owl, Asio otus, breeds across North America, Middle America and the widespread Palearctic. It is an owl in the family Strigidae, first described by Linnaeus in 1758. The species is also known by other names, including northern long-eared owl, lesser horned owl and cat owl. It uses semi-open country, especially woodland edges, and nests and roosts in thick stands of trees. It also takes over nests made by corvids. Unlike many owls, it is not strongly tied to one territory and may move about, with shared roosts used by several birds at once.
