Long-tailed Wood Partridge

Dendrortyx barbatus

The Long-tailed Wood Partridge is a medium-sized bird found in the mountainous regions of Mexico and Guatemala. It is known for its striking plumage, with a distinct long tail and intricate black and white markings on its body. This species is primarily ground-dwelling and forages for seeds, fruits, and insects in the dense undergrowth of cloud forests and pine-oak woodlands. The Long-tailed Wood Partridge is often heard before it is seen, as it has a distinctive call that echoes through the forest. Although not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and hunting pose potential risks to its populations.
