Long-tufted Screech Owl, Megascops sanctaecatarinae, is an owl of south-east Brazil, north-east Argentina and Uruguay. It is a resident bird of open and semi-open country, including sparse woodland, grazed pasture with trees, forest margins, secondary growth and woodlots close to settlements. It is a fairly large, bulky Megascops with strong feet and very noticeable ear tufts. Three colour forms are known, with the brown form the most common. Adults of that form have dark brown upperparts, a paler crown, a brown facial disc and underparts marked in brown.
