Lucifer Hummingbird

Calothorax lucifer

The Lucifer Hummingbird (Calothorax lucifer) is a small, strikingly beautiful hummingbird found in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Males have iridescent green upperparts, a brilliant purple crown, and a deeply forked tail, while females have a more subdued green and cinnamon plumage. These hummingbirds are known for their acrobatic flight and their preference for arid, desert scrub habitats. They are often seen feeding on nectar from desert plants such as agave and ocotillo. The Lucifer Hummingbird is a delight to birdwatchers and a valuable pollinator in its native range.
